Taylor-Made Bits and Pieces
From Our Principal
Ms. Vivian Taylor-Samudio

How time flies! Irma Lerma Rangel YWLS girls have been busy representing our school throughout the community. Here are a few recent and upcoming highlights…

Field trips…On March 30th and 31st, the 8th graders went to Austin. They were recognized by both the Texas Senate and House of Representatives with the reading of an Honorary House Resolution.

Out and About…Students had an opportunity to meet and hear Ruth Simmons, president of Brown University [first African-American woman to head an Ivy League school] at the Nasher Forum and Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson at the DeGolyer Library and Advisory Board for the Archives of Women of the Southwest. Girls also attended a Women’s Business Issues Advisory Council luncheon.

Gloria Campos visited the school on April 12, Dallas County Sheriff, Lupe Valdez, is scheduled for April 29, Judge Jane Boyle on May 10 and Clarisse Tinsley on May 12.

Special thanks to our counselor, Ms. Dolores Manglona, for organizing our school’s first College/Career Day on April 1. Over 40 presenters from business and high education institutions participated. The event was outstanding.

Career Camp Scholarship - One of thirteen students who participated in the Expanding Your Horizons Conference held at UTD will receive a full scholarship to attend a two-week hands-on science and math camp designed for middle school girls. The summer camp will be held on the TWU campus in Denton.

Recruiting…Next year our school will include the 7, 8 and 9 grades. We received 204 applications from students interested in our program. Selection letters were mailed out on April 8.
